April 2008

Welcome message
Vice President Margot Wallström, Commissioner for institutional relations and communication strategy, and Commissioner Ján Figel', Commissioner for education, training, culture and youth, welcome schools to register for Spring Day for Europe 2008.

President Dimitris Dimitriadis hosted the first Spring Day online debate
The first Spring Day online debate took place on 15 April 2008. Mr Dimitris Dimitriadis, the president of the European Economic and Social Committee, hosted the online debate. The debate theme was “Entrepreneurship and cultures through dialogue”. More chat debate themes coming soon.

Spring Day school visits
Have you invited a national, local or European public figure to visit your school? Send us your information to be published on our website in the School visits section. Public figures can be members of the European Parliament or national parliaments, members of the national governments, your mayor or local councillors, writers, other famous people at local, regional and national level. More about who is going to back to school.

3000 schools registered with Spring Day
3000 schools from European Union Member States and beyond have now registered to take part in Spring Day for Europe 2008. On 21 April 2008, IES Zaframagon, Olvera from Spain became the 3000th school to register with Spring Day for Europe 2008.

Spring Day activities
Tell us about the Spring Day events organised in your school and you will be featured on the homepage of the Spring Day website for 15 minutes. Some other activities are now open on our website.

Spring Day 2008 Blog
Schools are invited to highlight their local, national and European initiatives that focus on bridging cultures through dialogue, in the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. Contact your national coordinator whenever you would like to publish a piece of news on our blog.

Spring Day competitions
The competitions encourage students from 5 to 20 years of age to submit entries – such as texts, pictures and audio/visual productions - that result from classroom activities. Prizes will be awarded for the best entries.

Spring Day resources
We recommend you a set featured online resources and a Spring Day teacher handbook. We are currently working to put in place an online repository with learning objects focusing on the general theme of the year: Intercultural Dialogue.
