Margot Wallström encourages young people to make their voices heard

20/06/2008 by: Joan Lindberg

“You are the real VIPs!” said Mrs. Margot Wallström to students at the Katedralskolan in Uppsala, Sweden, on 13 May 2008. Mrs. Wallström, Vice President of the European Commission in charge of Institutional Relations and Communication, visited the school to meet more than 400 students to debate on the future of Europe.
After her introduction, Mrs Wallström took questions from the audience and discussed with the students. Some of the issues that interested young people were the Treaty of Lisbon, relations with individual member states, EU enlargement and human rights.

During the second hour of her visit, Mrs. Wallström had a round-table discussion with a smaller group of students who study International Relations.

Issues discussed were for example the environment and the Kyoto Protocol, the Olympic Games in China, the situation in Burma, and, on a more personal level, the advantages and disadvantages of being a public figure.

The main outcome of the event was that young people are the future and it is important that their voices are heard in matters that affect us all. Free and open discussion is the way to deal with challenges facing us in the areas of the environment, human rights, and social welfare.
