Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus went back to school 20/06/2008 by: Petru Dumitru
Mr. Valdas Adamkus, President of the Republic of Lithuania, recently visited his childhoold school, Kaunas Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasium. The visit took place on 6 May 2008 and included a meeting with teachers and students as well as an artistic performance.
Upon his arrival, Mr Adamkus was welcomed in the front of the school by all students and teachers. He was first invited to attend an artistic performance of folk dances and songs and secondly, to join a debate about the European Union and Lithuania. Some of the students were also interested to learn more about their school back when the President was a student there.

Mr. Adamkus also met with Lithuania’s three national debate champions, who are also students at Kaunas Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasium. The champions, Gedmine Bubnyte, Giedre Pesenkaite and Justina Motiejunaite, and their teacher, Nijole Marija Tikuisiene, gave special speeches to the President.
Referring to Lithuania’s accomplishments since 2004, when Lithuania became an EU Member, the President explained that the country has been revived, much like nature’s does when the spring season arrives. Mr. Adamkus also congratulated the students for being so well prepared and ready to take responsibilities in society, as the adults of tomorrow.
Romualda Liutkuviene, a teacher at Kaunas Jonas Jablonskis Gymnasium, explained that all teachers and students really enjoyed themselves throughout the entire visit, being able to share ideas and thoughts directly with their President.
