Spring Day was launched in 2002 as an initiative of the Members of the European Convention. The original idea was to involve schools in debating exercises on how to better communicate Europe to its citizens. By offering a wide range of traditional and ICT-based activities, Spring Day aims to encourage meaningful dialogues between youth and local, national and European public figures.

European Schoolnet has carried Spring Day forward in cooperation with and with the financial support of the European Commission. Due to its success, the event has since been held annually. Every year, the number of schools willing to participate in Spring Day grows, making it one of the most successful events for schools in Europe.

  • For Spring Day 2003, 5 501 schools from 29 countries schools across Europe registered to take part; leading national and European politicians went back to school and a large number of debates and European cultural celebrations took place.
  • Spring Day 2004 had 5 627 schools debating and celebrating the fifth EU Enlargement.
  • Spring Day 2005 focused on the European Constitution. 6 620 schools registered to organise meetings, debates and events on European values, the European Constitution and the EU institutions.
  • Spring Day 2006 had a special focus on “Debating our Future”. With 7 501 schools registered, it offered a large scale of activities. Many public figures took part in the event by going back to school to meet students, join face-to-face or online debates.
  • Spring Day 2007 was an opportunity to enhance and support European citizenship education in schools, in the year when the European Union celebrated its 50th anniversary. The portal was at the heart of the events by harvesting information material to support and encourage teachers to involve their classes. The campaign to celebrate Europe promoted knowledge and debates and involved many European political leaders.

Spring Day for Europe 2008 is now open to registration!

This year, we hope to increase the number of participating schools across Europe to set up activities to strengthen dialogues between young Europeans and political leaders.

Join us to make the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue an unforgettable event in your schools and be a part of an initiative that promotes intercultural dialogue and helps raise awareness of cultural diversity with young people, as a major asset to our common European cultural heritage!
